RAMALLAH, West Bank, June 20 (UPI) -- Palestine's newly appointed Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah submitted his resignation Thursday to President Mahmoud Abbas, officials said.

Hamdallah took office June 2, succeeding Salam Fayyad, who stepped down after feuding with Abbas, The New York Times reported. At the time of his appointment, Hamdallah said he planned to serve until mid-August.

The BBC said it was unclear why Hamdallah, who is also president of An-Najah National University, resigned.
