Sarkozy, IMF chief meet on debt crisis

PARIS, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy and International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde held talks Saturday on the eurozone debt crisis, the BBC reported.

Neither commented on the talks after an hourlong meeting in Paris, the British broadcaster said.

The European Commission has urged members to come up with a bailout plan to restore confidence in banking amid the debt crisis.

But France and Germany, the dominant powers in the eurozone, haven't agreed on how to proceed, the BBC said.

Sarkozy is also to meet this weekend with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

EU members are considering steps to prepare the bloc's economies and banks to survive a potential default, leaders say. Among other things, European Commissioner for Economic Affairs Olli Rehn said Friday ministers were discussing fast-tracking plans for a permanent rescue medium and that he expected a solution on recapitalizing European banks within a few days, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The BBC said leaders are discussing further actions and hope to announce new measures at a November G20 meeting in Cannes, France.
