ST. LOUIS, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- A 14-year-old boy was in critical condition after being shot by St. Louis police, officials said.
The unidentified teen was found by police as they responded to a possible carjacking on Sunday. He allegedly ran when he was spotted and fired on officers before being shot, St. Louis Metropolitan Police spokeswoman Leah Freeman said in a statement.
No officers were injured in the incident, police said. The teen is reportedly conscious and talking.
Witnesses reported hearing officers tell the teen who they were and ordering him to surrender, police Chief Sam Dotson said.
A semiautomatic pistol allegedly belonging to the teen was found at the scene and police are tracking down one or more shell casings, Dotson said.
"A 14-year-old with a gun I think really goes to the conversation about the epidemic of violence that we have in our community," Dotson said. "That a 14-year-old has access to a gun or feels the need to have a gun, and certainly when officers approach, running or pointing that gun at officers, it does nobody in the community any good."
