Maine Gov. LePage says Trump 'could be one of the greatest presidents ever'

AUGUSTA, Maine, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Donald Trump won the endorsement of Maine Gov. Paul LePage on Friday -- a man who made headlines recently for saying that drug dealers impregnated white women in his state.

"He's a businessman. I'm a businessman," LePage said on the conservative "Howie Carr Show" Friday. "I think he could be one of the greatest presidents if he sits down and puts together a good team."

LePage was once a supporter of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's presidential campaign before Christie left the race. Now LePage is the second governor to throw support behind Trump, after Christie endorsed him earlier Friday.

"I was Donald Trump before Donald Trump became popular," LePage said. "So I think I should support him since we're one of the same cloth. And Chris Christie, he's a blunt guy. They're both a little shy, but I'll work on them as we move forward."

LePage went viral earlier this year when he made racially charged remarks suggesting that drug dealers came to Maine from New York to sell heroin and impregnate white women. He also suggested that heroin dealers be publicly put to death by guillotine.
