MANCHESTER, N.H., Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's campaign admitted to reporters Thursday that Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders raised more money in January.

At a breakfast held by Bloomberg Politics in Manchester, N.H., Robby Mook, Clinton's campaign manager, told reporters that despite hitting all time fundraising highs in January, the Clinton campaign did not keep up with Sanders.

"I recognized in the summer of last year when those first fundraising reports came on that Sen. Sanders was going to raise a lot of money," Mook told reporters. "I believe he will have the resources to push this campaign well into the spring. He out-raised us in January, and we've been very candid with our online supporters that Sen. Sanders' online supporters have given more often, a higher proportion of his list contributes."

Clinton raised $15 million in January, compared with the $20 million raised by Sanders. Clinton's campaign told Politico that it mostly relied on larger donations. A statement from Sanders' campaign says he still relies heavily on small donations, averaging at about $27 a piece.

Earlier this week, in the wake of Sanders' extremely narrow loss to Clinton in the Iowa caucuses, Sanders hit another milestone: raising $3 million in the 24 hours that followed the caucuses.

Michael Briggs, Sanders' communications director, told The Washington Post: "It's been our best day ever."
