WASHINGTON, July 1 (UPI) -- President Barack Obama's approval rating has hit 50 percent for the first time in two years.

A CNN/ORC poll released Tuesday found that 50 percent of Americans approve of Obama's handling of the presidency -- his highest numbers since the poll was conducted in mid-2013.

Obama has a disapproval rating of 47 percent.

Obama's approval rating is five points higher than it was last May, when 45 percent of Americans approved of his handling of the presidency.

The poll found that 52 percent of Americans approve of Obama's approach to the economy, up from 46 percent in May.

But the numbers indicated that 53 percent of Americans disapprove of the president's approach to gun control.

The poll numbers come on the heels of an eventful week for the president, who saw the Supreme Court validate his landmark healthcare reform law and his stance in favor of gay marriage.

Obama also gave a widely discussed eulogy at the funeral of Charleston shooting victim, South Carolina state Sen. Clementa Pinckney, where he led mourners in a rendition of "Amazing Grace."

On Monday, Obama signed into law a bill giving him the authority to fast-track trade deals like the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
