WASHINGTON, May 8 (UPI) -- A World War II-era aircraft participating in a 70th anniversary V-E Day flyover event in Washington, D.C., safely made an emergency landing after a malfunction.

A P-51 Mustang, a long-range fighter plane, broke formation from a group of three planes to make an unplanned landing at Reagan National Airport on Friday.

The aircraft had a hydraulics malfunction and appeared to land without sustaining any damage or causing any injuries.

The airport's Twitter account called the incident a "flashback Friday" event.

"We were taken back in time to when vintage aircraft actually landed here!" the Twitter post read.

The airport later posted a video of the landing.

Dozens of WWII-era aircraft flew over the National Mall in Washington to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the war. At least three P-51D Mustangs -- the definitive version of the P-51 built in 1944 -- were involved in the flyover.

The small P-51D Mustangs accompanied large bomber aircraft like the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress as they dropped ordnance over Germany toward the end of WWII.
