COLUMBUS, Ohio, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Police in riot gear used tear gas and pepper spray to disburse rowdy Buckeye fans after Ohio State took an unlikely national college football title over the Oregon Ducks.
Thousands of fans at the university's Columbus campus took to the streets to celebrate the win, and it quickly turned into a riot. The partiers set fire to trash cans, trash bins and couches. There were some reports of gunshots on campus after the game.
When the raucous crowd headed to the Ohio State football stadium for more celebration, they were met by the SWAT and riot police with pepper spray. Police used three canisters of tear gas, and within minutes the streets were empty. The Columbus Fire Department said up to 90 fires were extinguished through the night. There were no reports of injuries and few arrests.
The Buckeyes steamrolled Oregon in a 42-20 victory at the National Championship football game on Monday night. Oregon was a favorite to win.
