BELLEVILLE, Ill., Aug. 1 (UPI) -- An elderly man in Illinois is behind bars for allegedly putting sewing needles into pre-packaged meat sold at a local grocery store.
A criminal complaint filed Wednesday against 68-year-old Ronald G. Avers alleges the Shop 'n Save customer hid needles in meat packages on seven different occasions between May 2013 and July 2014.
At least one person was injured by Avers' needles, and prosecutors say a second woman found a needle in her mouth while eating.
Security footage obtained by prosecutors shows Avers riding his motorized scooter and carrying his oxygen tank around the Belleville, Ill. store as he inserts the needles into Shop 'n Save's inventory.
"Every now and then I would stick one in a hamburger," Avers admitted when questioned.
"Mostly hamburger, a couple of times I did it with a roast, maybe a pork chop every now and then."
When asked why he set the potentially deadly traps, Avers responded with chilling apathy, saying he planted the needles "Just for the hell of it."
"It was stupidity. I didn't want to hurt nobody."
