LUDINGTON, Mich., March 5 (UPI) -- Although the label doesn't say so, Belmont Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream has nuts in it. That's why the FDA has recalled the flavor made by House of Flavors Ice Cream Company.
The company, based in Ludington, Mich., sells its ice cream in Aldi stores in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
The FDA issued the recall after fielding complaints from consumers who suffered allergic reactions after eating chocolate covered nuts in the ice cream.
"Consumers who may have an allergy or severe sensitivity to nuts run the risk of serious or life- threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product," the FDA wrote in a press release.
According to the FDA, only the Aldi-stocked 1.5 quart containers with UPC code 4149816310, date code 13340 and 1334, and best-of date marked Dec. 7, 2014 are affected by the recall.
The makers of Belmont Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream are currently trying to understand where and how the rogue nuts made their way into the recalled cartons.
