Vice President Biden names new chief of staff

WASHINGTON, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Vice President Joe Biden named senior aide Steven Ricchetti as his new chief of staff Wednesday.

Ricchetti replaced Bruce Reed, who announced he was leaving next month after two years on the job to become president of The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, a Los Angeles philanthropic organization that specializes in reforming and modernizing the U.S. education system.

Ricchetti has some 30 years of public service under his belt. He worked in the Clinton administration and ran a public affairs firm. He was named Counselor to the Vice President in March 2012.

"Steve and I have been friends for years, and I was thrilled when he joined my staff as counselor," Biden said in a written statement. "He has a wealth of experience in policy and government, he knows Congress, and he has strong relationships with the West Wing staff."

Biden also announced Communications Director Shailagh Murray would add the role of deputy chief of staff to her current responsibilities.
