Doctor convicted for role in Michael Jackson's death released

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- The doctor convicted of involuntary manslaughter in pop star Michael Jackson's death, was released from the Los Angeles County jail Monday, officials said.

Conrad Murray left the jail under escort after serving two years of a four-year sentence, a sheriff's spokesman said.

"It's been a long time coming," Murray's attorney, Valerie Wass, said shortly before he was released. "I'm so anxious for him to get out and get on with his life."

Murray, 60, was sentenced in 2011 in Jackson's 2009 death from an overdose of the anesthetic propofol, which the doctor administered.

Wass, said her client was eligible for parole, has challenged the conviction and will continue to do so, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The doctor wants the verdict overturned because of insufficient evidence. If that occurred, he would be allowed to practice medicine again in California.

Wass also filed on other grounds that wouldn't necessarily allow Murray to practice medicine, the Times said.

A jury in Los Angeles this month found concert promoter AEG Live not liable in Jackson's death, ending a civil trial that included testimony about the entertainer's health problems, his struggles with drugs and his attempt at a comeback tour.
