TROY, Ala., Aug. 20 (UPI) -- The Troy, Ala., school district is resegregating its classrooms under the guise of "parent choice," parents claim in a federal lawsuit.
Lead plaintiff John Johnson sued the Troy City Board of Education, five school board members and two school administrators on his own behalf and for his son, Courthouse News Service reported Tuesday.
Johnson claims resegregation is disguised as "parent choice," the practice of allowing parents of children in kindergarten through the sixth grade to choose which teacher and which students they want in the same classroom as their children.
"In a few instances the Troy City School District disregarded requests by Caucasian parents to place their child with African-American teachers," the complaint states, adding the School District created a "racially engineered classroom setting that consisted of ... a total of 12 all African-American classes" in the 2012-13 school year."
The city school system serves 2,087 students, 62 percent of whom are African-American.
