Mother of missing Colo. teen found dead calls his killer 'a monster'

VALLECITO, Colo., July 1 (UPI) -- The mother of a Colorado 13-year-old whose remains were found after he disappeared from his father's home says whoever killed her son is "a monster."

Elaine Redwine said her son Dylan's disappearance and murder has haunted her. She last saw her son at a Colorado airport when she put him on a plane for a court-ordered visit with his father, Mark Redwine, over Thanksgiving last November.

"It was at the airport and he was getting on the airplane and I said, 'Oh don't be such a man! Give your mom a hug. And he gave me a big ol' hug and I told him I loved him," she told KUSA-TV, Denver, Sunday.

The LaPlata County Sheriff's department said remains were found in a wooded area near a lake about 10 miles from Mark Redwine's home in rural Vallecito last week. Other items belonging to the victim were also recovered.

Initially, both parents, whose relationship is strained, blamed the other for the child's disappearance but authorities, who have classified the case as a criminal investigation, said both are cooperating with detectives.

Mark Redwine has said he left Dylan home alone to run errands and when he returned, the boy had vanished. He told The Denver Post last week the news Dylan's remains had been found and identified "blindsided" him.

Elaine Redwine, speaking publicly for the first time since her son's disappearance, said thinking about how his remains were spread around the remote area disturbs her.

"The fact that his bones were spread. The fact that wildlife got to him. Whoever did this is just a monster," she said. "To not do something proper, he deserved so much more than to just have his remains eaten by wildlife."
