Woman once declared legally dead gets 1-year jail sentence

PENSACOLA, Fla., June 12 (UPI) -- A woman who disappeared from Pennsylvania a decade ago and was once declared legally dead was given a one-year jail term in Florida for a probation violation.

Santa Rosa County Circuit Judge David Rimmer imposed the sentence Tuesday on Brenda Heist, known in Florida as Kelsie Smith, the Pensacola News Journal reported

She had pleaded no contest to a charge of failing to check in with authorities as required, the report said.

Heist disappeared from her home in Lititz, Pa., in 2002 and was declared legally dead in 2010.

It was not known Heist was alive until she turned herself in April 26 and said she was a missing person, authorities said.

Monroe County deputies released her but she was arrested May 3 in Gainesville on a probation violation stemming from her April conviction for stealing the identification of a person whose home she cleaned, police said.
