Trial postponed in FAMU misdemeanor hazing case

ORLANDO, Fla., May 28 (UPI) -- The hazing trial of Florida A&M University drum major Jarrod Deas, scheduled to begin Tuesday in Orlando, Fla., was postponed to June 25, court records said.

The alleged hazing of Keon Hollis occurred on the same night, and the same bus, as the fatal hazing of Robert Champion, 26, in 2011. Deas, Hollis and Champion were drum majors of the school's noted marching band, and Hollis endured the same hazing ritual on the bus, moments before Champion did, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Deas isn't charged in Champion's death.

If convicted, Deas could be sentenced to a year in jail, the newspaper said, noting the difference between misdemeanor hazing and felony hazing is the severity of injury. Hollis wasn't seriously injured in the ritual.

The trial was to begin Tuesday morning, but Assistant State Attorney Nicole Pegues was needed in another courtroom at the time. Orange County, Fla., Judge Martha C. Adams postponed Deas' trial.
