U.S. offers rewards for terrorism suspects

WASHINGTON, March 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. government has placed a $5 million bounty on each of two U.S. citizens it says are aiding a Somalia terrorist group.

The State Department's Rewards for Justice program announced the reward Wednesday for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Omar Shafik Hammami and Jehad Serwan Mostafa.

Both men are on the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorists list and are believed to currently be in Somalia.

They are suspected of conspiracy to provide material support to al-Shabaab, including the Islamist militant group's media and military activities.

Hammami, 29, is a native of Alabama. He moved to Somalia in 2006 where the State Department claims he received training from al-Shabaab and eventually commanded a contingent of foreign fighters, CNN reported.

Officials said he also used writings, rap songs and videos to recruit English-speaking youths.

Hammami's family has said they fear for his life after he criticized al-Shabaab's leadership for corruption and extravagant lifestyles.

Mostafa, born in Wisconsin, is believed to be either 27 or 32. He attended college in Oklahoma before moving to Somalia in 2005. Once there, officials said, he led foreign fighters and served as a media expert and recruiter.
