DETROIT, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- A truck rented to carry equipment for Vice President Joe Biden on a visit to Michigan was stolen outside a Detroit hotel, the Secret Service said.

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan did not specify what was in the U-Haul truck or the value of its cargo, but said there were no weapons that could have put the public at risk, The Detroit News reported Monday.

The truck had been parked outside the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel when it was stolen late Saturday or early Sunday, Donovan said. It had not been recovered, Sgt. Eren Stephens of the Detroit police said.

Biden was scheduled to speak Monday at a Labor Day rally in the city.

Donovan said the theft "will not affect the visit."
