Alleged killer considered in Spierer case

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., May 4 (UPI) -- Police are looking into whether the disappearance of an Indiana University student is linked to William Clyde Gibson, who is charged with murder in two deaths.

Lauren Spierer, 20, went missing after a night out with friends in downtown Bloomington on June 3, The Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal reported.

Bloomington police Capt. Joe Qualters said in a release detectives have been assigned to look into whether there are any links between Spierer's disappearance and Gibson.

"We have no indication that there is any connection to Lauren's case, but we are certainly interested in anyone who comes to the attention of law enforcement for targeting women as victims," Qualters said.

Gibson was charged last week in the April 19 death of Christine Whitis, 75, of Clarksville, and the October 2002 killing of Florida resident Karen Hodella, 44. He is also a suspect in the death of Stephanie Kirk, 35, of Clarksville, whose remains were found buried in Gibson's back yard.

Floyd County Prosecutor Keith Henderson said he is awaiting the results of an autopsy before pressing charges against Gibson for Kirk's death.

Henderson said it is too early to accuse Gibson of being a serial killer, but police have asked the FBI to create a suspect profile of him to compare with other cases.
