PITTSBURGH, April 11 (UPI) -- Some students at the University of Pittsburgh say they are moving off-campus or even going home and taking exams online following a series of bomb threats.
Students have put information about available housing online, The New York Times reported.
Police evacuated five buildings starting at 4 a.m. Wednesday after more threats were received.
Evan Fitzpatrick, 20, told the Times that on Monday, when there were threats involving 12 buildings, his 11 a.m. class was canceled after 10 minutes, and he was unable to return to his dorm room because that building too was evacuated. Then a 3 p.m. class was canceled.
"I think that we started off thinking it was a joke," he said. "Then it got annoying. Now, at this point -- I won't lie -- I got a little bit scared."
There have been at least 56 threats since Feb. 13. Some, like the first, have been scrawled on walls, and others sent to news organizations in anonymous e-mails.
The university has begun ratcheting up security with students required to present ID and open bags and backpacks at building entrances. This can mean long lines for students trying to get to class.
