Oakland occupiers protest high bails

OAKLAND, Calif., March 4 (UPI) -- Members of Occupy Oakland marched to denounce the high bails given to three members who were arrested on robbery and hate-crime charges.

The three were lodged in jail on more than $100,000 bail after being arrested last month for allegedly mugging a passerby and making derogatory remarks about her perceived sexuality.

About 75 supporters rallied downtown Saturday night and chanted anti-police slogans, but no incidents were reported.

Occupy blogger Jessica Hollie told the Oakland (Calif.) Tribune the six-figure bail amounts were "ridiculously high" and added she was confident the defendants had not broken any laws.

Hollie characterized the charges as a move by the city to discredit the Occupy Oakland movement. "With all the crime in Oakland, why is this crime so high profile?" she asked.
