Occupy Newark protesters evicted

NEWARK, N.J., Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Police and firefighters evicted protesters at Military Park in Newark, N.J., and removed the remnants of the Occupy Newark's camp Wednesday, officials said.

Newark Police Deputy Chief Tracy Glover said protesters were told that if they did not have a permit to be in the park after a 9 p.m. curfew, they must leave immediately, The New York Times reported.

Officials said no arrests were made and most of the encampment was cleared by 1:30 a.m., although several protesters made comments to officers as they cleared tents, pallets, blankets and other items.

At its height, about 30 people stayed overnight at the encampment and 50 to 60 people would be at the site during daylight hours, Anthony Batalla, who has been at the park since it was erected in November, told the Times.

Protesters said the eviction marked a change in the city's approach to the protesters, which had been cordial. In November, the city's police chief agreed to waive a permit required to assemble in Military Park, but on Tuesday, the city sent a letter to the encampment, telling Occupy Newark the city decided against waiving the permit.

"It said, 'Respectfully, we appreciate working together, but this is over,'" said Cass Zang, who has been coming to the encampment since November.
