PHOENIX, March 1 (UPI) -- Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Thursday he believes President Obama's birth certificate might be a "forgery."

"We believe probable cause exists that we believe forgery and fraud may have been committed," Arpaio said in Phoenix with his volunteer posse by his side, dredging up a case all but the most ardent of conspiracy theorists thought had been put to rest long ago, KTAR, Phoenix, reported.

Arpaio launched his investigation six months ago after receiving a Tea Party petition to investigate the certificate provided by the White House last April.

Arpaio's volunteers presented videos to news organizations detailing their suspicions, adding they had hoped their investigation would find Obama's birth certificate to be authentic.
