Police: Josh Powell's house a fake

SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Steve Powell says he will not talk to law enforcement agencies investigating the disappearance in Utah of his daughter-in-law, Susan Powell.

A notice Powell filed Tuesday in Pierce County Superior Court in Washington State said he "does not wish to discuss or make statements of any kind regarding any subject matter, including, but not limited to, statements pertaining to any alleged or suspected criminal activity," The Salt Lake Tribune reported. The agencies involved include the FBI, Utah state investigators and the West Valley, Utah, police.

Powell is in jail on charges of voyeurism and possession of child pornography.

Powell's son, Josh, killed himself and his two young sons by setting his rented house in Graham, Wash., on fire Feb. 5. Investigators say Josh Powell didn't actually live in the house.

Pierce County Sheriff's Sgt. Ed Troyer told Dateline NBC that investigators think Josh Powell was still living in his father's home in Puyallup, Wash., and just rented the house to fool his social worker, KSL-TV, Salt Lake City, reported.

"We believe that the house was staged, just for the purpose of the visitation and to make himself look like a good dad with photos on the wall, the kids' stuff, the minivan in the driveway," Troyer said last week. "Unfortunately, it was everything but that."

Powell, long considered a person of interest in the disappearance of his wife Susan, set fire to the house in Graham, killing himself and his sons Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5.

Susan Powell was reported missing more than two years ago after Josh Powell said he went camping in the middle of the night with his two sons.

Josh Powell lost custody of his sons to his in-laws after his father was arrested.
