Landfill combed for clues in Josh Powell case

GRAHAM, Wash., Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Volunteers searched a landfill in Washington state for items Josh Powell dumped before killing himself and his two sons, police said Monday.

Investigators from the Search and Rescue section of the Pierce County Sheriff's Office sifted through 20,000 pounds of recycled paper on a tip that Powell may have unloaded material at the LRI Landfill, in the community of Graham, before igniting his house last weekend with himself and sons inside.

About 20 volunteers arrived early Sunday to carefully examine bales of recycled paper, newsprint and junk mail, but found nothing of importance, Seattle's KOMO-TV reported.

Authorities earlier searched a Tacoma-area storage unit Powell had rented and found a blood-stained comforter, and also determined he had withdrawn $6,500 from a checking account the day before his house burned in a gasoline-fueled inferno.

Police were searching for clues that might aid in the search for his wife, Susan, who disappeared in 2009.
