Corgi, missing in avalanche, returned

BOZEMAN, Mont., Jan. 6 (UPI) -- A Welsh Corgi dog caught in an avalanche on a Montana mountain that killed one of its owners returned to its family four days later, a family member said.

Ole, a Pembroke Corgi, accompanied Bozeman, Mont., skier Dave Gaillard, 44, and wife, Kerry, Saturday when they started down the 9,200-foot Index Peak, the Billings (Mont.) Gazette reported Thursday.

An avalanche broke, with most of the snow funneling where Gaillard was skiing. He was buried by snow, and Kerry, at the edge of the avalanche, hung on to a tree to avoid being swept away.

Search-and-rescue personnel said there was no sight of Ole, who they said they believed was also buried at the site.

Ole was found Wednesday 4 miles away from the avalanche site in Cook City near a hotel where the Gaillards had been staying, the Gazette said.

Cooke City businessman Bill Whittle drove the dog back to Kerry Gaillard and daughter Silver Brelsford and said Ole looked to be wobbly but in overall good condition.

"It's a miracle," Whittle said.

"How in the world he made it, I don't know," said Bill Whittle's wife, Kay. "If he could just talk -- who knows what he did from the day of the avalanche until today?"
