Minn. boy, 3, killed by random shot

MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- A 3-year-old Minneapolis boy died of a head wound sustained when a stray bullet fired outside his home hit him as he headed to a closet to hide.

Terrell Mayes Jr. was one of four boys eating dinner in the two-story house when the shooting began Monday.

Terrell, who was hit as he climbed the stairs to the closet where the boys had gone during previous shootings in their neighborhood, died Tuesday.

He is the city's youngest homicide victim this year, the Minneapolis Star Tribune said.

"You keep 'em in, you keep 'em in, but yet and still that bullet, that devil, came right through the wall and took my baby," Terrell's mother, Marsha Mayes, said.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak called the child's death an "outrage" and a "reckless act." He asked the public's help in finding who fired the bullet.
