FORT JACKSON, S.C., Dec. 15 (UPI) -- The first female commandant of the Army's school for drill sergeants in South Carolina was suspended and is under investigation, an Army spokesman said.
Command Sgt. Maj. Teresa L. King, 50, was temporarily removed from her duties Wednesday, but the Army would not say why, citing privacy concerns, The New York Times reported.
"She is still nominally the commandant," said Col. Christian Kubik, a spokesman for the Army's Training and Doctrine Command.
King was named commandant of the Fort Jackson school in 2009, overseeing the training of drill sergeants for the entire Army. The position earned her a spot on Oprah Winfrey's O Power List and she was featured in 2010 in O, The Oprah Magazine.
The 28-year Army veteran was an aide to former Vice President Dick Cheney when he was defense secretary under President George H.W. Bush.
Sgt. Maj. Robert E. Maggard, King's deputy commandant, is acting commandant, the Army Times reported.
