MIAMI, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- A woman and her 5-year-old daughter were killed in a landslide as Hurricane Jova hit the western coast of Mexico, authorities said.

The storm quickly weakened to a tropical depression over land, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said. But Jova still deluged some areas in west-central Mexico with inches of rain.

Cihuatlan and Melaque, two municipalities on the coast of Jalisco, were left without water or power and with roadways blocked by flooding and landslides, the Guadalajara Reporter said. Restoring electricity was expected to take two to three days.

Norma Irene Rebolledo, 21, and her daughter, Yolanda Marisol, were killed in Cihuatlan. About 500 people were forced out of their homes by the storms, and some injuries were reported.

At 5 p.m. EDT, the center of Jova was about 20 miles east-southeast of Tepic in the inland mountains. Winds were no more than 35 mph and dropping but rain could still be a problem, forecasters said.
