WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- GOP hopefuls scoff at Occupy Wall Street
WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain called participants in the Occupy Wall Street movement unpatriotic because they were targeting successful people.
Cain, former chief executive officer of Godfather's Pizza, said on CBS' "Face the Nation" that Wall Street and the banking industry was being unfairly blamed for the failure of the Obama administration's economic policies.
"To be angry at somebody because they're successful is anti-American in my opinion," Cain said. "This is a distraction from the failed policies of the Obama administration. Why be mad you don't have a job at bankers and Wall Street? They're the ones that help create the jobs."
Cain opined that the high-profile rallies had been orchestrated by labor unions and other President Obama allies to take some of the media spotlight away from the administration's struggles.
"Even though we have our challenges, I believe that the protests are more anti-capitalism and anti-free market than anything else," Cain said.
Rival candidate Newt Gingrich largely agreed with Cain, who has been showing recent strength in polls among Republican voters. Gingrich, who is back in the pack, said Occupy Wall Street had its roots in poor schooling.
