Poll: GOP likes Perry; Mitt fades

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Republicans seem to like Herman Cain and Rick Perry, but the luster may be wearing off other members of the GOP presidential field, a Gallup Poll indicates.

The results of Gallup's Positive Intensity Score for the latter half of August found strongly favorable impressions of Cain and Perry among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, but less enthusiasm for Michele Bachmann, Mitt Romney and Ron Paul.

Cain leads in positive image at 27 percent, slightly ahead of Perry at 25 percent. Still, those two are well ahead of Bachmann (13), Romney (11), Rick Santorum (10), Newt Gingrich (7), Paul (6) and Jon Huntsman (1).

The scores were the lowest of the campaign for Romney, Bachmann and Paul, Gallup said Tuesday.

"Now, Perry enjoys some separation between himself and his most likely challengers in both positive intensity and support for the nomination, marking him as the clear front-runner at this point in the campaign," Gallup said in a written statement.

Cain's lead in favorable impression was offset by a woeful 4 percent of Republicans who said they wanted to see him nominated. But Perry's popularity has held up even as he becomes more well-known to the electorate, Gallup noted.

Undeclared candidates Sarah Palin and Rudy Giuliani scored 16 and 17 respectively.

Gallup's Positive Intensity Score was compiled through a random survey of 1,200 voters nationwide Aug. 15-28. The margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.
