VENUS, Texas, April 25 (UPI) -- A man who shot and killed a Texas deputy sheriff and then was fatally shot had threatened his family before officers arrived, authorities said.

Wesley Davis, 47, reportedly threatened his wife, sister and another person with a weapon before he was locked out of a house near Venus, Texas, Saturday, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

Sheriff's deputies received a call about someone with a weapon, Johnson County Sheriff Bob Alford said.

"A deputy knocked on the door and he was told that he [Davis] was in a storage shed," Alford said. "They did tell him to be careful."

Davis opened fire when officers approached the shed, Alford said, hitting Deputy Clifton Taylor, 31, three times.

Taylor died at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth shortly afterward.

Davis, who had been staying at the house just a few days after arriving from Oklahoma, was killed when two other deputies and a Venus police officer returned fire, Alford said.
