1 dead, 3 wounded in Calif. shooting

MONTEREY PARK, Calif., April 25 (UPI) -- A case of road rage escalated into a stabbing and then gunfire Sunday that left one person dead and three wounded in Monterey Park, Calif., authorities said.

Monterey Park Police said the dead man was shot by officers after he opened fire on them. The wounded included an officer treated for a non-life-threatening injury. The condition of the two bystanders injured in the 5 p.m. incident was not known, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Police were hunting for a second assailant who was believed to have been hiding in an apartment building, the newspaper said.

The episode was believed to have started with a hit-and-run crash, officials said.

Monterey Park Police Capt. Eugene Harris said it wasn't clear if the wounded bystanders had been involved in the hit-and-run or stabbing.

"It was a very chaotic," Harris said. "There were people everywhere."
