Duke rape accuser arrested in stabbing

DURHAM, N.C., April 4 (UPI) -- A woman whose 2006 rape allegations against Duke University lacrosse players were thrown out is charged with stabbing her boyfriend, Durham, N.C., police said.

Crystal Mangum, 32, was arrested before dawn Sunday and was being held without bail on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon, The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported.

Police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said officers found an unnamed 46-year-old man, described as Mangum's boyfriend, stabbed in the torso. The victim was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Five years ago, Mangum accused members of the Duke lacrosse team of sexually assaulting her while she worked as a stripper at their party.

State Attorney General Roy Cooper later dropped all charges and prosecutor Michael Nifong was disbarred for withholding evidence.

Mangum dropped from sight and then graduated from North Carolina Central University in 2008 with a degree in police psychology and released a memoir, "The Last Dance for Grace: The Crystal Mangum Story," WTVD-TV in Raleigh-Durham reported.

Last year, Mangum was convicted of child abuse, vandalism and resisting an officer for slashing the tires of her then-boyfriend's car, smashing the windshield and setting fire to his clothes in a bathtub while her three children were nearby.
