Lab tech admits murder of Yale student

NEW HAVEN, Conn., March 18 (UPI) -- Yale University lab technician Raymond Clark III admitted he killed a doctoral student in 2009 and will be sentenced to 44 years in prison, a prosecutor said.

Clark entered a guilty plea in a New Haven, Conn., courtroom Thursday in the slaying of Annie Le and also pleaded guilty to criminal attempt to commit first-degree sexual assault, the Hartford Courant reported.

The sexual assault charge was new. He previously faced charges of murder and felony murder.

Clark, 26, will be sentenced to 44 years in prison, prosecutor David Strollo said, with sentencing expected May 20. Public defender Beth Merkin said he will not be eligible for parole.

Le's parents in Placerville, Calif., accepted the deal, Strollo said.

Strollo gave new grisly details about the murder scene and cited DNA evidence implicating Clark to back the new sex charge.

Le, 24, a doctoral student in pharmacology who was to be married days later, did research at the Yale Animal Research Center, where Clark took care of lab animals.

Raymond Clark II expressed sympathy to the Le family and said his son has "expressed extreme remorse."

The lawyer for Le's parents, Joe Tacopina, said they are still considering legal action against Yale.
