Alleged Mexican drug kingpin arraigned

NEW YORK, March 14 (UPI) -- Esteban Rodriguez-Olivera, an alleged drug kingpin extradited from Mexico, was arraigned Monday in federal court in New York.

Rodriguez-Olivera, 47, was arrested by Mexican authorities on a warrant issued by a U.S. judge and transferred to the United States Friday, the U.S. Justice Department said in a release.

Rodriguez-Olivera and his brother, Luis Rodriguez-Olivera, are alleged to have led "Los Gueros," an international drug organization responsible for shipping more than 100 tons of cocaine to the United States from 1996 to 2008.

He and his brother face federal criminal charges in the District of Columbia.
