DENVER, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Officials at a Denver breast-milk bank said a Craigslist advertisement offering to sell frozen mother's milk is "very dangerous."
The Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children's Mother's Milk Bank said there is a risk to the donor and recipient of such milk because a lay person cannot do appropriate screening, KMGH-TV in Denver reported Tuesday.
Lorraine Lockhart-Borman with the Mother's Milk Bank said, "We get medical releases from our donor's doctors, we test the donor's blood, and we pasteurize the milk to kill viruses and bacteria."
The Food and Drug Administration in December issued a warning to parents about the risk of contamination from chemicals, drugs or bacteria, as well as the risk of disease, including HIV, from unscreened milk, KMGH-TV reported.
The Craigslist post read, "I am a very healthy mom (never done drugs, smoked, or even drank alcohol) of three kids."
The poster of the ad said she is producing more milk than she needs and has frozen more than 200 ounces of milk that she would like to sell or work out some other arrangement.
