Son accused in samurai attack

SPRING VALLEY, Calif., Dec. 28 (UPI) -- The San Diego County Sheriff's Department accused a 39-year-old man of attacking his father with a samurai sword.

John Cahan of Spring Valley, Calif., was held on $100,000 bail Tuesday, charged with elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon in the Sunday morning attack, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.

Police said Cahan ordered his 69-year-old father to put out his hand so it could be cut off. When the father refused, Cahan allegedly struck him on the leg.

Cahan called paramedics several hours later, saying there had been an accident. The father was hospitalized in critical condition.
