Ex-Chicago cop arrested in drug ring

CHICAGO, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- A retired Chicago policeman aided a drug ring implicated in killing, kidnapping and robbery, the U.S. attorney's office in Chicago said Monday.

Glenn Lewellen, 54, was arrested by Drug Enforcement Administration agents in Las Vegas Friday.

He and three others were named in an expanded federal racketeering indictment returned Thursday that cites two killings, six kidnappings, robberies and distribution of hundreds of kilograms of cocaine.

Lewellen, a police officer from 1986 to 2002, fed information about federal investigations to a drug ring led by Saul Rodriguez, authorities charged.

Rodriguez and five previously charged defendants were arrested in April 2009, accused of conspiring to steal hundreds of kilograms of purported cocaine from a suburban Chicago warehouse.

Lewellen was charged with racketeering and drug conspiracy. He was not named in the two slayings, but he was charged with participating in a 2003 kidnapping and a robbery of 100 kilograms of cocaine and cash.

Lewellen also obstructed justice to protect the Rodriguez ring, including testifying falsely in a federal trial in 1999, the indictment charges.
