22 illegal immigrants arrested in SoCal

OCEANSIDE HARBOR, Calif., July 17 (UPI) -- U.S. authorities said they arrested 22 illegal immigrants who tried to enter the country by boat near the shores of Camp Pendleton in Southern California.

Customs and Border Protection agents took into custody 20 Mexicans, one Guatemalan and one Colombian, all suffering from sun overexposure and dehydration after being at sea on a panga boat, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Agents spotted the boat near the shore at the edge of the U.S. Marines Corps base about 3:30 a.m. Friday, authorities said.

The Oceanside Harbor Police Department worked with federal agents to prevent the boat from returning to sea.

The group was taken to a Border Patrol office for processing, officials said, and investigators were trying to find those responsible for smuggling the immigrants.
