U.S. flagship in Russia for Victory Day

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, May 7 (UPI) -- The USS Blue Ridge, flagship of the U.S. 7th Fleet, docked Friday in Vladivostok where crew members are to join in Russia's Victory Day celebrations.

This year, May 9 marks the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. The U.S. consul in Vladivostok told RIA-Novosti that sailors from the Blue Ridge will march in a parade Sunday in Vladivostok.

U.S. and British military contingents are also scheduled to march in the Moscow parade.

Vice Adm. John M. Bird, commander of the U.S. 7th Fleet, is in Vladivostok and is to participate in the ceremonies, Novosti said.

Other events on the U.S. schedule include a "culinary duel" between sailors from the two nations, visits to children's hospitals, sporting contests and concerts by the 7th Fleet Band.
