Teacher reassigned for O.J., RuPaul pics

LOS ANGELES, March 12 (UPI) -- Three Los Angeles elementary school teachers have been reassigned after displaying pictures of O.J. Simpson, Dennis Rodman and RuPaul at a black history event.

Superintendent Ramon Cortines of the Los Angeles Unified School District said the three teachers, white men teaching first, second and fourth grades at Wadsworth Elementary School, which is 90 percent Latino, were suspended without pay for three days and will now be reassigned to other schools, The Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

Cortines said the teachers, who have reputations as pranksters, allowed students to carry pictures of Simpson, controversial basketball player Rodman and famous drag queen RuPaul during a Feb. 26 Black History Month parade.

The superintendent said the prank does not appear to have been racially motivated and he did not believe dismissal was necessary, despite calls from some civil rights leaders.

Principal Lorraine Abner wrote a letter to parents and other local residents last week for the "questionable decisions" made by the teachers, whose names were not released.
