Death for Lebanese accused of spying

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Three people were sentenced to death by a military court in Lebanon for allegedly spying on Hezbollah for the Israelis, a judicial official said.

A military tribunal condemned a Lebanese man to death for "having contacted the Israeli enemy and passing on information," reports Lebanese newspaper The Daily Star.

Officials said the court ruled the man, Mussa Ali Mussa, had passed information about Hezbollah officials to Israeli contacts for roughly 10 years. Two other people were sentenced on similar charges.

A crackdown was launched on alleged Israeli spies in 2009. Several people have been sentenced to death since the crackdown though none has been executed.

Last week, Beirut filed a complaint at the United Nations to protest Israeli plans to build a fence along the so-called Blue Line, a demilitarized zone separating Israel from Lebanon. The U.N. peacekeeping mission in Lebanon met with Israeli and Lebanese military authorities to help defuse the border crisis.

Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah last week accused Israeli of launching a psychological war against Lebanon.

Hezbollah and Israel went to war in 2006. A U.N. resolution that secured a cease-fire agreement calls on Hezbollah to disarm while reminding Israel of its obligation to respect Lebanon's sovereignty.
