KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo, March 8 (UPI) -- Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo said more than 100 people were behind a February coup to oust the president.

DRC officials said 126 people were behind an alleged plot to unseat Joseph Kabila. Several of the people arrested by the government appeared on state television severely wounded, the BBC reports.

Initially, DRC authorities announced the arrest of more than 30 people after an apparent coup was thwarted in late February. Authorities said men armed with machetes and light weapons tried to break into Kabila's home but were repelled by military guards.

The country's information minister said the attackers showed signs of military training but suggested the incident wasn't the work of national security forces.

Kabila wasn't at the residence at the time of the attack

The BBC notes DRC authorities described the alleged coup attempt as an act of terrorism.

Kabila took office in 2001 after his father and former president was assassinated.
