New York endures 14 shootings in one day

NEW YORK, April 27 (UPI) -- The city of New York saw 14 shootings take place in less than 24 hours, leaving one person dead and several others in critical condition, authorities say.

Police said Sunday's shooting total included the death of a 19-year-old man in the Bronx that appeared to be the result of an accident while the unidentified man was handling his brother's gun, the New York Post reported Monday.

A Sunday afternoon assault in the Bronx lead to the shooting of another unidentified man, age not reported, leaving the victim in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head, police said.

A third Bronx shooting at 11:45 p.m. Saturday involved an unidentified 44-year-old man who was shot four times in the torso resulting in life-threatening injuries.

Police sources said Chris Owens, 13, was shot in the head in Harlem during a teen gathering, leaving him on life support and in critical condition. A corrections officer was also shot at the scene along with another unidentified victim. Both are expected to survive the gunshot wounds to their legs.

The Post said the remaining shootings in Harlem, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx all involved unidentified victims whose medical conditions were not specified.
