Granholm to hold hearing on Detroit mayor

DETROIT, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm issued an order saying she will hold hearings next week aimed at removing Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick from office.

The unprecedented hearing is set to take place next Wednesday at One Cadillac Square, a state office building in Detroit's New Center area, The Detroit News reported Tuesday.

The Detroit City Council is seeking to oust the Democratic mayor over his handling of a police whistle-blower settlement.

In her 18-page order, Granholm she said the hearing will address only two issues: Whether Kilpatrick failed to disclose or conceal from the City Council "information material to its review and approval" of the whistle-blower settlements and whether the mayor authorized the settlement in "furtherance of his private and personal interests?"

The Democratic governor has appointed Gregory Holiday, a senior administrative law judge for the State Office of Administrative Hearings and Rules, as her special assistant in the matter.

Granholm said Kilpatrick may refuse to testify or decline to answer specific questions if his testimony would incriminate him in his pending criminal prosecution.
