Netanyahu: Olmert deal would be 'invalid'

JERUSALEM, April 19 (UPI) -- Any potential deals between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian officials would be "invalid," former Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu says.

The favorite to become the next Israeli prime minister said any agreement reached between Olmert and Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas should be considered null and void, IsraelNationalNews.com reported Saturday.

"The agreement that Olmert will or will not achieve is no more than a cynical invalid deal -- not in legal terms, but in terms of reality," Netanyahu was quoted as saying Friday.

The former Israeli prime minister also reportedly said he would not honor any deal between the two sides should he take office again.

Both Abbas and Olmert are attempting to reach a tentative agreement regarding the growing crisis in the Middle East as part of a deadline imposed by the United States.

Netanyahu said any such deal would likely be part of Olmert's election strategy as part of his Kadima political party.

"Then the public will be the judge," Netanyahu said. "If (Kadima) wins the election -- fine. But if they don't, they can't force upon the public, in a cynical and manipulative manner, something the public is not interested in."
