SAN MATEO, Calif., March 15 (UPI) -- A nanny is suing the California family she lived with and worked for, alleging in federal court that she was over-worked and under-paid.
Vilma Serralta, 69, of San Mateo claims she was given $1,000 to $1,300 monthly to keep up the 9,300-square-foot home of Sakhawat and Roomy Khan. She said she cooked, cleaned and cared for the couple's daughter while working 14-hour days, six days a week without breaks during the four years she was employed by them, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
"I only want what's right. And I want other workers to feel they can stand up for their rights and ask for what they're due," Serralta said.
The couple denies Serralta's allegations, their attorney Elizabeth Tippett said.
A group of Bay Area domestic employees united with Serralta Thursday, protesting outside the Khans' home, which is being sold for $17.9 million.
