WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- A Washington newspaper said former Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale planned to endorse Sen. Hillary Clinton’s bid for White House.
The Hill, a Washington newspaper, in an unsourced report said Thursday that Mondale may endorse Clinton as media reports began highlighting the similarities between Mondale’s 1984 presidential campaign and Clinton’s 2008 race.
The Hill said Mondale couldn't be reached and the Clinton campaign didn't comment on the report.
Mondale selected U.S. Rep. Geraldine Ferraro, D-N.Y., as his vice presidential candidate in 1984, marking the first time for a woman to be selected on a major party's presidential ticket in the United States.
Clinton, D-N.Y., would be the first female nominated for president by a major political party if she wins the Democratic Party's nomination.
Inevitability, discipline, and union support provided backbone for Mondale’s White House bid and are the cornerstone of Clinton’s current campaign.
If Mondale endorses Clinton, he will be among the highest ranking former government officials to endorse a presidential candidate for the 2008 election.
