Report: Olmert, Abbas discuss major issues

JERUSALEM, July 31 (UPI) -- Israel's prime minister and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas have reportedly established a back channel for secret talks on various issues.

The Jerusalem Post Tuesday said Abbas and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert used the talks to hammer out a final status agreement on mutual interests.

Those issues reportedly include major and long-running disputes over the establishment of a Palestinian state, the future status of Jerusalem and Israeli settlements on the West Bank.

Israel has been seeking closer ties with Abbas ever since rival Hamas pushed his government out of Gaza.

The Israeli government had no official comment on the reported negotiations.
